One out of eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer. What many breast cancer patients don't open up about, read about, or discuss are the fearful moments, the angry moments, and the sometimes funny moments that women experience, beginning with that first scary doctor's appointment.

Freezing-cold mammograms that flatten breasts like two fried eggs. Crushing loneliness. Nightmares about confronting mortality.

But in Dancing with Breast Cancer, Janay Cosner gets real about her journey with the disease. Through a series of poems, Cosner opens up and shares her experience. Each poem is a snapshot of her odyssey. What does it mean to be a survivor, these poems ask. What does it mean to be a warrior?

From diagnosis and surgery to chemotherapy and radiation to what is now her new normal, Cosner asks all her readers—patients, family members, friends, doctors, nurses—to join her in a raw and very real dance with cancer.

My head high, I shout,

I'm alive. My shoes start

to dance again to the rhythm of life.

Come dance with me.

Praise for Dancing with Breast Cancer

Every woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer will relate to the emotions, the drudgery, and the multiple steps they take while "dancing" with cancer. As a medical oncologist, I have treated many women with breast cancer. However, I never knew how they really felt till I read Janay's poems. They speak to me of the patients' pain, loss, fear, and daily struggles as well the hope of a future when they will be able to dance again with their partners and not with cancer. Ms. Cosner bares her soul so that we (the healthcare providers) can be better prepared to care for the "person" and not just the "cancer."

—Khalid Rehman, MD, FACP, medical oncologist and assistant professor of medicine at The New York Medical College

What’s most impressive about Janay Cosner's Dancing with Breast Cancer is her gutsy willingness to relive her ordeal from the first suspicious mammogram, through the traumas of treatment, to a wary recovery. Cosner has chosen poetry as the medium for her memoir, a choice that allows her to move swiftly yet with detail through the shifting phases of her illness, and all the accompanying emotions from horror and terror to humor and hope. Cosner is no sit-back survivor. She’s a savvy, sexy lady doing a defiant dance—a dance many women will recognize—a dance that will be eye-opening for everyone else.

—Joan Murray, author of Swimming for the Ark

Can there be beauty in pain? Only if it is poetry, and only when the poet touches your aching heart. Janay, a woman diagnosed with breast cancer, yearns to be treated like a person. She exposes her fears, frustration, and fighting spirit as she dances with fate. With a poem for each stage of her journey, she dances to a new tune, culminating in a symphony of shock, agony, anger, resolve, and regrets. Her poems are a window into a woman’s heart, her suffering, and her remarkable poise under duress. This book is for women with breast cancer, for Janay knows just how they feel; it is for all women, with or without cancer, for she reveals what it is like to suffer; and it is a book for caregivers, for it shows the pathway to treating a patient as a person and not just a case study. This is a book of hope.

Dancing with Breast Cancer A Memoir in Poems Janay Cosner 9780692855553 Books Reviews

I have several friends who have been through treatment for breast cancer, but until I read this book I was unable to fully understand the magnitude of their situations. The poems in DANCING WITH BREAST CANCER provide some amazing insights and thought-provoking details about a patient's physical and emotional journey; they also evoke quite a few laughs. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to empathize with and acknowledge the struggle a woman with breast cancer goes through as she reconciles who she was before with who she is now.
I was moved by these poems and am sharing them with family and friends, people I know whose lives have been upended by cancer. The collection is arranged like a journey which is at turns frightening and courageous and even funny. Most importantly, there is a human voice here and a skilled poet.
Loved this book. This is for all of us who went through breast cancer or are going through it, please know you are not alone. This book is truly from the heart and Janay expresses it so well. It's for all of us who just can't. Thank you
Review of “Dancing with Breast Cancer”

Janay Cosner’s book of poetry, “Dancing With Breast Cancer” is powerful, and gut-wrenching.  One woman’s journey, from the moment of discovery, diagnosis, and victim, to survivor.

Her angry, panicked and darkly humorous poems give the reader keen insight into the sadness a woman feels when a breast is violated.  But in the end she refused to let the excising by the scalpel or the vision in the misty mirror define her.
I love finding a book that I can relate to so thoroughly. I purposely read this slowly, reliving so many moments of my own cancer journey. Usually, this type of writing makes me nervous will the writer relate to what I went through as a cancer patient and survivor? or will I be disappointed? Or horrified? I've been all of these when I read other similar books.
But this time around I took notes in the margins and although I'm not a poet, I'm going to write my own replies to her poems. Supportive husband? Yes, I have that. Disfigured body? Oh, yeah, almost exactly the way she describes it. But I have only had 2 oncologists and would've stayed with the original if she hadn't moved away. My docs have all been wonderful; the author's docs, sadly, were not as great.
I don't dance, but I could feel her joy as she used the metaphor of dancing to get through the horror that is cancer - the diagnosis, the treatment, the after math. I highly recommend this to others who need support.
I have never been a poetry person because I never got it, however, reading Dancing with Breast Cancer - I got it totally. Having worked for a major cancer organization before I retired, I not only worked with funded organizations but had the opportunity to speak with women about their fear of having breast cancer and not wanting a mammogram even though it was strongly encouraged to where do I go, what can I expect? Janay Cosner has really nailed fears, emotions, denial, acceptance and has expressed it beautifully. I believe the book speaks to those who have had breast cancer and are warrior survivors and to the general public. I volunteer for a few organizations and will promote the reading of this book extensively to them and others. An outstanding contribution to understanding the cancer, the individuals and their support systems! Well done.
I am not an avid poetry consumer, but Janay Cosner's book about her journey through breast cancer treatment and recovery is very accessible. It has the overarching narrative structure of a memoir, yet the rhythmic patterns and poetic approaches vary to help capture the mood and events described in each poem. The book traces the path of diagnosis, treatment and recovery of a survivor of breast cancer. It will be relatable to those who experience the chemotherapy and radiation therapy typical of cancer treatment, and those who have experienced a bumpier ride like Janay's the anguish of a hand ruined by chemicals leaking through a bad "stick," confusion of firing doctors and getting second and third opinions, and the final insult of being told by experts that she didn't need chemo in the first place. Anyone with breast cancer or any serious illness will relate to Janay's journey through the world of the sick and the suffering and will root for her as she comes to a deeper understanding of herself, her marriage, her friendships and her life.
This is a collection of poems that should be on every physician's bookshelf. It is an intimate, brutally honest window into the heart and mind of a survivor. It is also an "understanding" for others who need and want to support loved ones on this difficult journey. And finally it is inspirational- a celebration of life itself told by a brave and joyous woman.
